What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a method of applying a protective and decorative finish to a wide variety of parts and products. The powder used for this process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is applied with a system that electrostatically charges the powder. The charged particles adhere to the grounded parts. Once heated, the particles fuse to the parts resulting in a smooth continuous coating that is highly durable and resistant to a diminished coating quality as a result of impact, moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet light, and other extreme weather conditions.

Thermoset Powder Coatings vs. Thermoplastic Powder Coatings

There are two types of powder coatings – thermosetting and thermoplastic. Thermosetting powder coatings are based on lower molecular weight solid resins that melt when exposed to heat. After they flow into a uniform thin layer, they chemically crosslink and form a reaction product of much higher molecular weight. These newly formed materials are heat stable and will not soften back to the liquid phase when heated. There are three types of thermosetting powders: epoxy, polyester and acrylic.

A thermoplastic powder coating is one that melts and flows when heat is applied, but keeps the same chemical composition once cooled. Thermoplastic powders exhibit excellent chemical resistance, toughness, and flexibility. They are generally applied to a surface that has been preheated to a temperature significantly higher than the melting point of the powder. As a thermoplastic powder material is applied to the hot surface it will melt and “”fusion bond”” to the surface and then “”flow out”” into a strong, continuous film. As the film cools it develops its physical properties. Nylon and polyester powder coating materials are the most commonly used thermoplastic powders.

Why Powder Coating?

Powder coating is preferred because it does not contain any solvents and releases negligible amounts, if any, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere. The benefits of powder coating for consumers are simple: powder coating will make you piece look better and last longer, not to mention, its reduced environmental footprint.

Surface Preparation

Surface preparation is a vital part to achieve a superior powder coated finish. At Nix Powder Coating & Painting, LLC. our surface preparation can involve a total of four steps. These steps include sandblasting (with various media), hand sanding, “pre-baking” to prevent off-gassing and chemical pretreatments. We will determine the correct combination to deliver the highest level of durability and quality.
